Dr. Carole Ferrand completed her secondary education at King David High School Linksfield, matriculating in 1966. She went on to study English at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. After moving to the United States, she pursued further studies at the Pennsylvania State University, where she obtained both her master’s and PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders.
For 28 years, Dr. Ferrand served as a faculty member, student advisor, and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences at Hofstra University in New York. Her teaching and research specialized in the bioacoustic principles that govern both typical and disordered speech production. Professor Ferrand was honored to receive the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award in 2017
Dr. Ferrand’s research has appeared in respected peer-reviewed journals, and she has held editorial roles for several of the journals. She has also presented her findings at both national and international conferences. As an author, she has written two widely used textbooks in her discipline: “Speech Science: An Integrated Approach to Theory and Clinical Practice,” now in its fourth edition, and “Voice Disorders: Scope of Theory and Practice,” currently in its second edition.
Since settling in Colorado in 2018, Dr. Ferrand has continued to create educational resources for students in Speech and Hearing sciences. In 2021, she published the “Speech and Hearing Anatomy Course Companion Workbook,” which features narrative, self-assessment exercises, and color-in illustrations by her artist husband, Ted.
At present, Dr. Ferrand is developing two new works: a “Bioacoustics of Human Speech Production Course Companion Workbook”, modeled after her earlier publication, and a non-academic book exploring the profound relationship between dinosaurs and modern birds.
Beyond her professional life, Dr. Ferrand enjoys hiking and biking with her husband in the picturesque surroundings of Colorado. She is also a fan of opera and has traveled throughout Europe on opera tours. She looks forward to continuing these musical journeys in the future.
“My years at King David High School Linksfield were pivotal in nurturing my love of English grammar and literature, providing me with both the structure and imagination that would shape my academic career. A key influence in this development was my Form 2 (9th grade) English teacher, Mike Wade, whose passion for language was matched by a rare gift for bringing it alive. His arresting, resonant voice could transform abstract verse into something immediate and stirring, leaving an impression that has remained with me ever since”.
