Eli is a Consultant Neurologist at Kings College Hospital and Professor of Neurology in the department of neurosciences, Kings College London.
After matriculating from Linksfield in 1984, Eli Studied medicine at Wits and graduated in 1990. He completed his internship and did his neurology training at Baragwaneth Hospital. He moved to London in 1997 to extend his training at Charing Cross Hospital and completed a doctorate in medicine (MD) in neuroimmunology at Guys Hospital investigating markers of axonal loss in MS.
He was appointed consultant at Kings College Hospital in 2000 where he developed the regional multiple sclerosis service. He built a successful trials unit and has participated in most of the pivotal trials of drugs for MS, including stem cell transplants that have altered the prognosis for people living with this disease. He has also worked with colleagues to extended palliative care for patients with advanced MS and address the mental health needs of his patients.
He was appointed a full clinical professor in 2022 in recognition of his clinical care, research and teaching. He continues to provide general neurology services in a district hospital where he is the clinical lead. He also runs a successful private practice in London.
Eli is married to Prof Pam Sonnenberg (KDHSVP 1983) and they have two children. He reads widely, enjoys theatre and music and is a collector of South African Art. He runs, has cycled across Britain and France, completed some of Europe’s iconic bike climbs and has hiked widely in Europe, South America and Asia.
