Gina Izerel is a 3D Game Artist and Animator currently working at FOX Sports in Los Angeles. Passionate about integrating emerging technology into film, broadcast, and games, she's leveraged her skills in animation and 3D modeling to redefine sports broadcasting, using LED technology, Augmented Reality, and video game engine tools. Working collaboratively with the Creative Services team, Gina develops virtual sets and creates 3D motion graphics.
Following her time at King David Linksfield, Gina studied at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, earning a BFA in Game Art and Animation with Summa Cum Laude honors in 2023. Moving to the US during a pandemic was no easy feat, but her South African heritage and fascination for nature greatly influenced her artistic and 3D work. Her work is often infused with touches of her identity. Throughout her degree, Gina focused on building 3D visuals for both film and video games, merging her passion for creativity and technology to make an impact in the entertainment industry.
In her final year of her studies, Gina landed an internship with Universal Pictures in Los Angeles, where she joined the Creative Technologies team, a division of the Filmed Entertainment department. She delved into "Virtual Production," using video game and LED technology to generate lifelike 3D backdrops for filming. 3D artists like Gina create 3D models, textures, lighting, and animations for virtual environments (see some of her work at Universal here).
Her final thesis project at Northeastern, "Glass Passages” is a short film created in Unreal Engine. It showcases her artistic journey, with a photoreal 3D version of Gina guiding viewers through virtual landscapes.
In August 2023, Gina joined FOX Sports. Gina and her team design 3D graphics for events like the National Football League (NFL), Superbowl, and FIFA World Cup (see what her team does here). With a blend of Augmented Reality (AR) and innovative 3D software, they're redefining industry standards in broadcasting, sports, and entertainment.
Gina is thrilled to continue the next chapter of her career working in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. If you'd like to explore some of her work, please visit her portfolio page at ginaizerel.com.
"King David shaped my perspective on career paths that I could explore beyond school. The school encouraged my creative side, helping me blend my love for art and technology through classes in Information Technology (IT) and Dramatic Arts. Thanks to teachers like Mr. Wilcox, I found a passion for animation and film, which even led me to work in Hollywood! In my IT class, I was the only girl, and I came to learn that more representation for women in technology was needed. King David supported me in continuing to pursue this path, ultimately inspiring me to become an advocate for more representation in the games, animation, and technology industries. I was so proud to visit King David again to speak with their Grade 8 Animation class."
