Greg Smith is a purpose-driven entrepreneur and a qualified actuary registered with the Actuarial Society of South Africa. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in Financial Planning. He began his career at Discovery, where he quickly rose through the ranks to lead the Product Development and Pricing team for Discovery Life. Later, he played a crucial role in overseeing the rollout of Discovery Bank, reporting directly into the Group CEO.
Greg's life philosophy centres around finding new ways to help people and society achieve better, more equitable and prosperous lives. This belief motivated him to become an actuary, design numerous award-winning insurance products, help start a bank, and contribute to the creation of one of Africa’s largest Social Impact Bonds.
Driven by this purpose, Greg founded OneSpark, an insurtech company dedicated to creating seemingly impossible products and technology, that wow clients and push the world forward. He firmly believes that each individual has the power to change the world. At OneSpark, this belief is embodied in a culture of boundary-pushers and forward-thinkers who challenge the status quo to push South Africa and the world forward.
OneSpark has won numerous awards, from the most innovative insurance company in the world and in South Africa, to being selected one out of six companies from Africa and the Middle East to join Google’s prestigious global growth incubator.
OneSpark has sold billions in cover across various insurance arms. In 2024, OneSpark partnered with Dis-Chem to introduce groundbreaking insurance products to the South African market, revolutionizing life insurance for all South Africans.
In 2022, Greg also won the prestigious prize of being named in the “Top 10 Most Inspiring global CEOs”, joining an elite set of global leaders.
He matriculated from Linksfield in 2007 and currently lives in Cape Town.
"King David provided me an incredible schooling experience, fostering friendships that remain as strong today as they were back then. It was a place where I learned and built a solid foundation, unmatched in South Africa, that truly prepared me to take on the world.
Many individuals played a pivotal role in shaping my foundation, giving myself as well as my peers the springboard needed for local and global success. I look back on my years there with immense fondness and gratitude.
I believe that King David is a truly special institution, having produced a remarkable number of individuals who have made substantial global contributions, collectively shaping the course of history and driving the world forward."
