Lance Gewer is an international, award winning cinematographer whose career spans 39 years. Lance has photographed 27 feature films, many dramas, documentaries and series for cinema and television. He has achieved great success over the years and has made a invaluable contribution to the development of South African Film and Television industry in all genres of the mediums.
Lance’s CV is long and diverse. His unique talent is evident in films like, Tsotsi (Oscar 2005), Beat the Drum (27 awards), Spud, Spud II, Kite (Samuel Jackson), The Fragile King, Happiness is a Four-Letter Word, Flight of the Storks, Jozi, Otelo Burning, Elelwani, Master Harold and the Boys, Mandela’s Gun, “Our Girl” (BBC series), How To Ruin Christmas franchise (Netflix), Ochberg’s Orphans (shortlisted for an Oscar) and Dancing with the Devil ( both by John Blair).
He has worked with so many brilliant and accomplished directors like, Gavin Hood, Jan Kounen, John Irvin, Jon Blair, Tristan Holmes, and A-grade actors, like Samuel L. Jackson, John Cleese, Freddie Highmore, Rutger Hauer, Ving Rhames. The list is endless.
He is a three times SAFTA winner, 6 time nominee, and the recipient of many prestigious awards. He was a finalist of Camerimage 2005 (the first South African nominated to the most prestigious cinematography festival) His work is on display on the cover and in the feature article of American Cinematographer and Kodak’s “In Camera” magazines.
Lance is a single parent to his two adult children he has raised since 1995. He was born and happily lives in Johannesburg, South Africa. Lance works anywhere and everywhere, in shantytowns and around the world.
