After matriculating from King David Linksfield 2004, Sara trained as a doctor and graduated cum laude from the University of Witwatersrand in 2010 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBCh). She later undertook general physician training graduating in 2017 (FCP(SA)) while simultaneously doing her masters thesis, graduating with distinction in 2018. After admission to the College of Physicians in 2017 she further specialised as a nephrologist in 2021 (Cert Neph(SA)). She completed her training within the Johannesburg academic circuit working in Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital and Helen Joseph Hospital.
From an early point in her career, she had a passion for internal medicine, specifically kidney disease and transplantation and completed her masters thesis studying the causes of long-term kidney allograft loss and dysfunction, with an emphasis on antibody mediated rejection of kidney transplants.
After emigrating to Sydney, Australia, she completed a fellowship in renal transplantation, followed by a fellowship in renal supportive care at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. She currently practises as a nephrologist, specifically transplant nephrologist and general physician at Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick, Sydney. She is also undertaking her PhD to explore barriers to and facilitate expansion of living kidney donation within Australia, with specific mindfulness to those from marginalised communities and expansion in living kidney donation rates to women.
In addition to being a nephrologist, her most important role is being a mother to two beautiful sons, Ethan and Asher, and wife to her husband, Ryan - also a King David alumnus.
“I am a proud graduate of King David Linksfield where I began nursery school at age 2! I was fortunate to have had my mother as a primary school teacher throughout my school career. I am forever grateful to King David – it was a wonderfully unique environment which instilled an excellent work ethic together with a strong Jewish identity.
King David gave me lifelong friends and a worldwide distinctive Jewish network of people that I believe is unparalleled. The teachers were dedicated to success, which facilitated a constant nurturing environment and prepared me well for a life in academia”.
