Professor Dan Stein is a clinician-scientist with particular expertise in the anxiety and related disorders. He was appointed Director of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit on Anxiety & Stress Disorders in 1997, and Professor and Head of the Dept of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town in 2005.
His work ranges from neuroscience research (he has a doctorate in the area of clinical neuroscience, and is interested in the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders) to more conceptual areas (he has a doctorate in philosophy, and is interested in how psychiatry contributes to addressing some of the big questions posed by life).
He is one of only a few clinicians that has an “A” rating from the National Research Foundation of South Africa.
He is one of the most highly published and cited clinician-scientists in the Southern hemisphere, having contributed more than 30 edited or authored volumes, and over a thousand papers and chapters.
